THREE PART COURSE STRUCTURE
Part 1: Scoliosis and Sagittal Conditions Fundamentals
Pre-requisite
Open to all heath-care and fitness professionals.
Course Description
This 12 hour course introduces the science behind scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis, including etiology, pathogenesis, pathomechanism, progression factors and adult spinal disorders. Learn clinical parameters for identifying scoliosis and hyperlyphosis even when no X-ray is available. This course is designed by Lise Stolze and Hagit Berdishevsky, industry experts in Schroth, a Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise system and recognized approach for improved diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders. A fitness algorithm for Adult Spinal Disorder will be presented to help guide therapists and fitness instructors in safe exercise selection and modification for their patient or fitness client with scoliosis or hyperkyphosis. This course is required before taking Parts 2 and 3.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course the student will:
This course is the prerequisite for Part 2: Scoliosis and Sagittal Conditions Practical.
- Understand pathogenesis/pathomechanism theories of Idiopathic Scoliosis (IS) and Adult Spinal Deformity (ASD)
- Be able to identify clinical and radiological parameters for scoliosis and hyperkyphosis
- Understand basic history, theory and research behind Physical Therapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) and the Schroth Method
- Be able to identify scoliosis curve types and gain a theoretical understanding of how breathing and exercises can be modified for the patient with IS and ASD in order to support safe spine alignment
- Understand basic concepts of how to modify exercises for people with scoliosis and kyphosis
- Understand scope of practice
This course is the prerequisite for Part 2: Scoliosis and Sagittal Conditions Practical.
Part 2: Scoliosis and Sagittal Conditions Practical
Pre-requisite
Part 1: Foundations of Scoliosis and Sagittal Conditions (provide certificate of attendance to enroll).
Course Description
In-Person Course: This 2-day, 16 hour practical lab course focuses on assessment and exercise modification for people with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis. Students will learn and practice assessment skills with the help of volunteers who have structural scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis. Fitness exercises including yoga, weight lifting, Pilates, and suspension training will be selected and adapted for these volunteers based on their assessment outcome. This course will provide the health care professional and fitness instructor the information necessary to communicate with each other for the benefit of the client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis.

A Certificate of Attendance is provided upon course completion.
- Assess the fitness client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis to determine best exercise selection
- Improve breathing strategies for the client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis
- Create a fitness program for the client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis based on the assessment to support safe movement choices
- Provide modifications to Activities of Daily Livings (ADL) with people who are living with scoliosis and spinal conditions
- Understand scope of practice and how the physical therapist and Fitness instructor can collaborate for the benefit of the adult client with scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis
A Certificate of Attendance is provided upon course completion.
Part 3: Advanced Concepts in Spinal Pathologies
Pre-requisite
